My New York Fashion Week: Women’s (Cyber) Experience with Christian Siriano

Playful. Charming. Fantastic. Nostalgic. These are the words that come to mind when looking at Christian Siriano’s spring/summer 2021 collection inspired by memories of his upbringing. The purpose, it seemed, was to give the audience a temporary escape from reality; bringing the viewer back to simpler times of watching Clueless and The Wizard of Oz, where anything and everything is possible with just a little sass and the clicking of your heels.

Siriano featured much of ‘80s and ‘90s trends into his own imagination while incorporating a nod to recent topics. With large flamenco ruffles, bra tops, and wild details such as feathers and flowers, it is obvious the designer intended to create a princess-and-villain whimsical touch to his collection. On top of this, Siriano made the bold decision of utilizing masks into each look, even featuring a dress and accessories with the word “vote” in a comic-book style to make a statement on the current pandemic and upcoming presidential election.

The show, along with the collection, was certainly a nostalgic escape from such an uncertain future. A message is to be taken from all of this: stay hopeful and remember to let the child in you come out every now and then.
