A Weekend in Boston, MA

At the end of May my family and I headed to Boston for a wedding. A lot of us hadn't been before - myself included - and we were so excited to explore the city! As soon as we landed I was already getting texts and DM's from friends who live there or often travel there on where to get the best food and what sights we should be seeing: eat a lobster roll, go to Boston Commons, and ride the train being some of the great suggestions. It was certainly a weekend jam-packed with lots of adventures and memories. Oh, the memories I'll have from this trip!

We like to get early flights whenever we travel to places so that we can have an entire day to ourselves to settle in or do whatever we want. I always find it easier to wake up at 3am for a flight than it ever is to wake up for an 8am class. I won't ever understand it. Once we got in and checked into our hotel, which was about 30 minutes from the city, it was clear we all needed food. We were suggested the 50's Diner. It was the cutest little diner filled with all things 50s related. It looked like it was straight out of a movie! I ended up getting eggs Benedict and breakfast potatoes and I am so glad I did!

Fortunately for us, the diner was just across the street from this pretty big outdoor shopping outlet! It's called Legacy Place; there were places to sit and every little area had a pretty green space to lounge at. We went to some small boutiques and we even checked out an Amazon bookstore! It was pretty cool to be in a physical Amazon store. There were bigger stores there as well, such as Anthropologie, Williams Sonoma, Free People, Urban Outfitters and more. There were stores for both the girls and the guys to have fun at, or even just sit at one of the plazas and take a break. Of course, I had to get a coffee as at that point, we had been up since the early hours and it was already mid-day. One of my personal favorite places to be at was Whole Foods. Currently, there isn't a Whole Foods anywhere near my town, so whenever there is one it is a special treat for my mom and I. We loaded up on snacks and drinks for everyone. We even tried the Italian hoagie potato chips, which we had seen all over the internet before, and they were AMAZING! Those were quickly eaten up, no problem.

That night we ended up going to the bride's parent's home for dinner. It was our first time meeting them and they were so nice and gave off such a FAMILY feeling. They made us feel right at home.

The next day we started a little late, grabbing lunch at the restaurant next to our hotel. We then hopped on the train that was right outside our hotel and made our way to downtown Boston. One thing to know about Boston is get prepared to WALK. We walked everywhere! From shop to shop, street to street. We found our way to the shopping district of the city and had some fun. When we got hungry we had one mission and only one mission: lobster. It honestly was the only thing we could talk about for weeks before this trip. We tried getting into a small lobster roll hole-in-the-wall but the seating situation was not enough for our group of nine.

We ended up following our GPS to Union Oyster House and man are we glad we did!! Officially established in 1826, this is the oldest continuously run restaurant in the United States. It has even hosted historical figures such as John Adams and Abigail Adams, even a King of France once. It was so cool reading about this place and seeing all the parts of the restaurant. They have a little gift shop and of course we had to get a t-shirt while we waited for our table! All of their food comes fresh, which luckily for us included lobster. We ended up getting a plate of fresh oysters for the table. My younger cousins haven't really been exposed to much seafood before, so oysters freaked them out just a bit. They were champs and tried it though (with a little bit of hesitation and lots of licking?) They both came to the conclusion that oysters weren't their thing. Just for fun, we had ordered a lobster roll to split with everyone and it was so good! When our lobster did finally come in we were just over the moon. Half of us got the lobster special, which happened to be a stuffed lobster and the other half got boiled lobster. I can't even lie; this was the best lobster I've ever had. Of course I got the special and it was amazing - sweet and tender, and the butter was so different and delicious! It was also just a blast to watch the twins eat their lobsters - one was chowing down while the other was a bit hesitant in cracking it open. When it was time for dessert we had to get Boston cream pie! To be totally honest, I didn't know what to really expect. I just knew what cream pie was from the Midwest's version. How completely different the real thing is! Almost cake-like, it was the best cream pie I've ever had! This whole meal was definitely an experience and I recommend it to anyone thinking of traveling to the city.

Right after dinner we got a couple of taxis (what an adventure that was) and headed over to Cheers. We passed Boston Commons on the way over - unfortunately it was a rainy day so we couldn't really experience this cool park to its fullest but it was fun to see! Cheers is a pretty small bar, famous from the show Cheers. My parents had really wanted to go and I'm glad we did! It was a quick in-and-out but we got some souvenirs and shirts. Of course we had to take pictures in front of the sign though and anywhere that had a photo opportunity!

We ended our day back at the hotel and sitting in the lounge with all of our friends, family, and those who were there for the wedding. It was nice to relax after all of that walking! On our last full day it was the wedding. It was smaller but so elegant! Of course, the bride was beautiful and the groom was handsome. It was such a lovely day and it was awesome to spend this time with our family!

In short, this trip was such an experience! It gave me a *little* taste of the city and I couldn't have loved it more. This is definitely not the last time I'll be in Boston!

Hi, it's nice to meet you!

I'm Ryan (but you can call me Ry). I'm just your average 23-year-old from the Midwest, on a mission to travel as much as I can, learn every day, and eat all of the good foods out there.
